Although the Atari Corporation was well known for their gaming systems, they also produced a series of home computers. Their most popular model was known as the Atari ST. In an attempt to design a new business class computer, they took the Atari ST series computers and coupled that with the Atari TT models. What they created became known to the world as the Atari Mega STE.
This computer came in both 2 MB as well as 4 MB models. When you purchased one, you would even get a high-resolution monochromatic monitor with it. Although in basic form, the Mega STE was a modified Atari ST, it also featured a number of the Atari TT model options.
But the best features of this computer, is that it offered a software switchable CPU speed. This software switchable CPU was capable at running at both 16 MHz as well as 8 MHz. This was important to Atari to be backwards compatible with all their previous systems.
This computer featured the Motorola 68000 coprocessor along with a Yamaha soundcard. You had your choice of the 720 kb, or the 1.44 Mb disk drives. The original release date of this computer was in 1991, but it would soon follow the remaining Atari ST models. The Atari Mega STE would end its production life towards the middle of the 1990s.
