In 2006 the Nintendo DS Lite was released. This new handheld was an upgraded format of the original Nintendo DS in which it weighed less and also had a longer battery life. Now in speaking about the Nintendo DS, the DS stands for dual screen. This was the first dual screen handheld to allow for multiple players on a single handheld. This system took its designs from the Game Boy advance and was released soon after throughout the world. In the 2007 the total number of Nintendo DS Lite units sold was well over 28 million worldwide.
The system is capable of receiving a WiFi signal from not only other Nintendo DS systems, but also the Nintendo Wii WiFi signals, as well as WiFi access points. The Lite is 218 g lighter than the traditional Nintendo DS as well as being smaller and more compact. This makes the Nintendo DS Lite 42% smaller than the original DS. Due to the fact that this handheld utilises a 1000 mAh battery versus the original DS’s 850 mHa battery, one can expect, at the lowest brightness setting, 15 to 19 hours of playtime.
The system also features a better LCD screen, which comes with four different levels of brightness, and can also be customised further. The screen is also lighter and is designed to be more shock resistant than the standard Nintendo DS.
Not only was the Nintendo DS Lite released in a variety of seven different colours, but also has available a variety of add-on components. These components include items such as extension connections which allow you to connect your Nintendo DS to the Nintendo Game Boy Advance.
This system was a complete redesign of the traditional look and feel of the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and the Nintendo DS.
It did not take long however for Nintendo to release special colours, as well as limited edition versions of this Nintendo DS Lite. In Japan, Nintendo released colours such as Crystal White, Noble Pink, and Jet Black. Even in Korea they received special limited-edition colours. Throughout Europe, the most common version was known as Smart Black, but as a special release, the Nintendo Corporation also released Coral Pink. Unfortunately, Coral Pink was just a glorified name for the Japanese version of Noble Pink.
Traditionally, in North America, the only available version of the Nintendo DS Lite, was that of the basic white colour, but towards the end of 2006 several other colours were released as special releases. These included a Crimson and Matte Black version that was bundled with a game, Brain Age 2.
Throughout the world there was a special Final Fantasy II edition, as well as two different Pokémon special release editions of the Nintendo DS Lite. There was also a special release version for the games of ‘Jump’, as well as ‘Love and Berry’. I could probably go on for hours covering all the various special release versions of the Nintendo DS Lite.
The Nintendo DS Lite is a popular handheld game console all around the world. This handheld also comes with several accessories that can be added onto the unit. These accessories include a second port, which will allow for playing Game Boy Advance cartridges, but not Game Boy Colour or the original Game Boy cartridges. You are also able to get a VoIP enabled headset, to allow you to play the various amount of VoIP enabled games.
The first official accessory for the Nintendo DS Lite, was that of the Rumble Pak. This Rumble Pak simply plugs into the expansion slot and allows the vibrations to be felt while playing certain video games. These vibrations include when a player bounces into any of the various obstacles in the game, or even loses their life in the game. The most popular bundle of this accessory was that of which came with the game Metroid Prime pinball.
Utilising the Opera platform Web browser, a Nintendo DS is capable of surfing the Internet. This is a cross platform Web browser, which would allow you to use either one screen or both screens at the same time to present a single webpage.
Utilising the USB port that can be found on the Nintendo DS Lite, one can actually connect the Nintendo DS to either five separate Nintendo DS units, or even into a host computer for access to the Internet. This is only capable of being done utilising Microsoft Windows XP.
The Nintendo DS Lite also comes with a slide controller. This controller comes as a packaged bundle with a game Slide Adventure. This slide controller is capable of being used as a regular controller as well, due to the fact that it is highly sensitive to pick up motions, just as if you were pushing a button.
In 2007, Nintendo also decided to release the Nintendo DS Lite bundled with a camera to allow face scanning. However, this camera as of yet has not been released outside of Japan.
