If you were to ask any video gaming enthusiast what the most popular video gaming console of all time was, they would simply say, the Nintendo Entertainment System. This was a third-generation home gaming console that was released back in 1985, at the Nintendo Corporation with 8-bit graphics. Originally released in Japan, it soon made its way to other markets and became a top seller throughout the North American market. The most popular game for the Nintendo Entertainment System was that of Super Mario Brothers.

It has been estimated that over 60 million Nintendo Entertainment System's sold throughout the world. It was the Nintendo Entertainment System that helped the North American continent repair after the 1983 financial crash.

Throughout the 1980s arcade games were extremely popular, and it was Nintendo that made arcade games that were the most popular. The Nintendo Corporation decided to create their own cartridge-based home gaming console.

The Nintendo Entertainment System had been a commercial success throughout Japan, so the Nintendo Corporation decided to move sales into the North American market. As an initial attempt, the Nintendo Corporation attempted to strike a deal with Atari to release their home gaming console. This deal eventually fell through, and therefore they released their own gaming console to the North American market.

The North American version was unveiled in 1985, at the CES show. The first time that this home gaming console was viewed, it was considered to be an instant success. Throughout the entire 1980s the Nintendo Corporation almost literally had no competition in the video gaming market of North America. By 1990, the Nintendo entertainment system was considered to be the best selling home gaming console to ever have been produced.

After 1990, several new companies were entering the home gaming industry throughout the world. This led Nintendo to be forced to create and release their next-generation video gaming console. Although their sales were decreasing, they would never actually drop completely by the time that the Super Nintendo Entertainment System would be released. After the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the Nintendo Entertainment System would slowly decline in sales.

The Nintendo Entertainment System was sold as bundled packages for around $200, which included a game, a controller and the video gaming console itself. There was however some exceptions to this rule as one package included the console, controller and a game with a light gun.

Throughout the world there were several different designs in the cases of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Not only was the design of the case different depending on region of the world, some regions also included a different set up in their game cartridge to allow for a lockout chip.

The Nintendo Entertainment System, pretty much maintained a monopoly of the home video gaming market throughout the world due to its specialised third-party licensing. What this meant was that under licensing contract that the Nintendo Corporation had with the various third-party developers, the game developers were not allowed to produce games for any other gaming console. What this did was to allow the Nintendo Corporation to put an official seal  on each and every game that was released throughout the North American market to show that it was an officially licensed game. There were several unlicensed games that were not very popular, however, they were still available. Several companies absolutely refused to pay any of the licensing fees that Nintendo required, eventually leading to a creation of ways around the lockout chip. Even the Atari Corporation created several games for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
