Due to the thriving popularity of the Nintendo Entertainment System, many companies were very interested in the creation of various hardware clones of the Nintendo Entertainment System home gaming console. All of these clones are considered to be unlicensed and pirated versions of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Some of these clones, even went as far as creating a superficial identical console unit to things like the Sony PlayStation, so that you could play the Nintendo Entertainment System games in the clone models.
These clone versions of the Nintendo Entertainment System could be found all around the world, due to the fact that the game console itself was sold in almost every single market in the world.
The Nintendo Entertainment System clones continued to be produced well after the discontinuation of the Nintendo Entertainment System itself. The various clones also took on various different case designs. These various designs were designed to make the clone look newer and included cases such as the Nintendo Game Cube, the Microsoft Xbox, and the Sony PlayStation 2. There have also been various portable handheld devices that have been designed to mimic the Nintendo Game Boy.
Nintendo has been fighting hard in various courts to prohibit the manufacture, as well as sale of these unlicensed clones. All the time the companies that were creating the clones began to include various games built into the cloned systems.
Although there were many different companies out there who created clones of the Nintendo Entertainment System, there were several corporations such as the Sharp Corporation that had been granted licenses to allow them to produce their own version of the Nintendo Entertainment System.
