On December 13th 2003, the Sony Corporation released their Sony PS PSX. This game console was based on the PlayStation 2 video game system. It also included a digital video recorder, as well as a DVD recorder. When this unit was first released, it was only available in Japan. The Sony Corporation had intended to release this unit to the rest of the world by 2004, but by 2005 the production was indefinitely postponed due to poor sales in Japan.

The Sony PSX came with either a 250 GB or a 160 GB hard drive to allow you to record home movies, various television shows, store digital photos, as well as play not only the PlayStation 2 games, but the PlayStation 1 titles as well. This unit was also designed to link up to the Sony PlayStation Portable in order to transfer music and video.

It was during the development of the Sony PSX that their XMB or XrossMedia Bar was developed. This unit did not come with any controllers at all; however, Sony had intended to release a specialised Dual Shock 2 version of their controllers. This unit also came with a USB port.

Commonly, the term PSX is often referred to as the PlayStation console itself, but this is not true as the X is added on due to the fact that this was an experimental cross-platform PlayStation. This was originally developed to be a Super Nintendo/CD ROM hybrid unit. Unfortunately, Nintendo ceased production and development of their hybrid unit, so Sony decided to redesign it for their own. It was when the media first reported about the PlayStation Experimental, that the name stuck. This unit is a media centre and not a game console; there is much confusion between the two.
