Genesis / Mega Drive
The Sega Mega Drive was released in Japan in 1988 and North America in 1989. The PAL region was released a year later and was marketed under the name of the Sega Genesis. The Sega Genesis or Sega Mega Drive was a 16 bit gaming console that gained much success in both Europe and Brazil, but could not put much of a dent in America's Nintendo monopoly.
Originally Sega thought to name the Sega Genesis the MK-1601, but ended up going with the Sega Mega Drive instead. Although most of the world knew the Sega Genesis as the Sega Master Drive, the South Korean version was called the Super Game Boy and the Super Aladdin Boy, which is how the name was translated and these models were released through Samsung Electronics.
