SG 1000 Mark III
On October 20th of 1985 The Sega Sg-1000 Mark III was released into the Japanese market, in order to compete with the Famicom. The Mark III was built to be backwards compatible with all of the Sega SG-1000 games as well as featuring a slot for the Sega Cards which were basically the same as the Mark II's Card Catcher add-on.
It was the Sega SG-1000 Mark III that would get a new case and marketed as the Sega Master System for release in countries outside of Japan. Japan received their version of the Master System in 1987, but it came with a built-in Yamaha sound chip, the Rapid Fire Unit and an optional 3-D glasses adapter.
As a form of regional knock out, the Japanese version came with a different cartridge shape and pin count in order to keep "the best" version available only in Japan.
