In 1993, the Atari Corporation released the Atari Jaguar as a means to compete against the Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive. This was a fifth-generation 64-bit gaming console that was considered to be a huge commercial failure. Because of the failing of the Atari Jaguar, the Atari Corporation left the hardware business for good.
Due to its unpopularity which saw the ending of the Atari Corporation’s reign in the video gaming industry’s hardware manufacturing, the Atari Jaguar eventually became popular due to a large fan base of home brew game makers. The system instantly became a cult classic in the video game industry.
The Atari Jaguar was not very well marketed due to the fact it was only marketed in the New York area as well as the San Francisco Bay area. A $500 million contract with IBM, helped increase productivity of the consoles for sale around the world. Unfortunately there was only a couple of games that were released at the same time that the system was, but eventually, the Atari Jaguar had its first hit game, which was known as Tempest 2000. Many popular games like Maximum Force and Area 51 use the Atari Jaguar to control the light gun.
